Fall 2017 - Calculus I

You can appreciate art without acquiring the ability to paint, or enjoy a symphony without being able to read music.  Math also deserves to be enjoyed for its own sake, without being constantly subjected to the question, "When will I use this?"

  • The final exam will take place on Friday, December 8.  Check the exam information page for more details.
  • Here are the solutions to problems 6 and 7 from exam 3, which I wasn't able to completely go over in class.
  • The third midterm exam will take place on Wednesday, November 29.  Check the exam information page for more details.
  • Because of its overwhelming popularity, I decided to write up a solution to problem 8 of the Applied Optimization assignment.  My methods are perhaps nonobvious, but I think they make for a cleaner exposition.  Please be sure to let me know if you have any questions.
  • Here are the Maple files I used to implement Newton's method in class on 10/23.  I've added comments to make them a bit more comprehensible, but please bring any questions you might have to me.
  • Here are the solutions to the optimization problem handout from 10/18.
  • The second midterm exam will take place on Wednesday, October 25.  Check the exam information page for more details.
  • Evening Calculus Help Sessions have started, and will take place every Sunday
    through Thursday, 7pm to 9pm, in MMH 140.
  • It's official, the Final Exam will take place during the Common Exam I period:
