DEPARTMENTAL NEWS, 2008-2009

  • Alumni News
    • Rebecca Haas, Class of 2008, is in the midst of Ph.D. studies in Industrial Engineering at Texas A&M with full support.
    • Susan Abernathy, Class of 2007, passed Ph.D. qualification exams in Analysis and Topology at LSU.
    • Jocelyn Stokes, Class of 2008, is attending Florida State (with full funding) to continue with graduate studies in financial mathematics.
    • Domingo Lara, Class of 2005, has accepted a position at Altarum after completing graduate studies at UT-Austin in Operations Research.
    • Leslie-Anne Juarez, Class of 2007, received medical school invitations from the University of Texas Health Science Centers at Southwestern, San Antonio, and Galveston. She has decided to attend UTHSC Southwestern. She also completed her first a half marathon in October.
    • Jeremy Nolan, Class of 2007, recently accepted a postion with the Denim Group.
    • Ryan Accosta, Class of 2005, passed his Ph.D. qualifying exams in computational mathematics at Stanford University.
    • Josh Reese, Class of 2005, helped make a short film.
  • Putnam Exam: Eight students braved the annual Putnam Exam in December of 2008. The high Trinity scorer was Brian Fitzpatrick with 20 points. Brian comprised one third of Trinity's team this year. The other team members were John Weber and David Stück.
  • Modeling Competition: Trinity had 2 teams compete in the annual COMAP modeling competition in February of 2009. One team earned a meritorious ranking (top 13%).
    • Tim Nunamaker and Jon Simpkins (advised by Peter Olofsson) - Meritorious
    • Louis Bilicich, Robert Danhof, and Daivd Stück (advised by Peter Olofsson) - Successful Participant
  • Goldwater Scholar: Jon Simpkins, an engineering major and math minor, received a Goldwater Scholarship. Please help us congratulate him.

INDIVIDUAL FACULTY NEWS

  • Peter Olofsson had many papers appear in journals this past year. They inlcude "A stochastic model of a cell population with quiescence" in Journal of Biological Dynamics, "Probability, Statistics, Evolution, and Intelligent Design" in Chance and "Intelligent Design and Mathematical Statistics: A Troubled Alliance" in Biology and Philosophy.
  • Brian Miceli published "Augmented Rook Boards and General Product Formulas", co-authored with Jeff Remmel, in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics.
