The Bachelor of Arts Degree
The departmental requirements for a Bachelor of
Arts in mathematics are:
- Mathematics core: MATH 1311, 1312, 2321, 2326, 3323, 3360, 3362.
- Seminar/Writing: MATH 2094 (twice), 3194, 4394.
- Mathematics electives: Eighteen (18) additional MATH semester
hours numbered 3xxx or above. At least three (3) of them must be
numbered 4xxx.
- Programming proficiency: CSCI 1320.
The appropriate choice of courses beyond those in the core depends
on the student's interests and career plans and should be determined in
consultation with the academic advisor. Course suggestions (not meant
to be exhaustive) for some common career tracks are given below:
- Secondary School Teaching-
First priority: MATH 3334, 3341, 3343, 3355. (The requirements
for secondary certification in Mathematics may be found in the
listing for the Education Department.)
- Mathematics in Industry-
First priority: MATH 3334, 3335, 3336, 3338, 3351. Also useful:
3357, 4367. The department encourages the student to complete
nine (9) upper-division semester hours in a related discipline.
- Graduate Study in Statistics-
First priority: MATH 3334, 3335, 3351. Also useful: MATH 3336,
3343, 4361, 4364.
- Graduate Study in Applied Mathematics-
First priority: MATH 3336, 4361, 4364, 4367. Also useful: MATH
3334, 3338, 3351, 3357, 3359. The department encourages the student
to complete nine (9) upper-division semester hours in a related discipline.
- Graduate Study in Mathematics-
First priority: MATH 4361, 4363, 4364. Also useful: MATH 3334,
3336, 3341, 3343.
FULL ACCEPTANCE INTO PROGRAM is granted if the following requirements
are met at the time of application:
- MATH 1311, 1312, 2321, 3323 with grades of C or better.
- Grade point average of at least 2.0 in all mathematics courses.
- Completion of at least one mathematics course required for
the major while enrolled at Trinity University.
- CSCI 1320 with a grade of C or better.
PROVISIONAL ACCEPTANCE INTO PROGRAM may be granted
if the Department of Mathematics is convinced that the applicant has
promise of graduating with a degree in mathematics. In cases of
provisional acceptance, courses and performance standards will be
specified so that the applicant may be granted full acceptance.
